<p>The Xuan Mai Eco Green Tower represents a new and exciting benchmark for Ho Chi Minh City – with the recent opening of Landmark81, the city is growing in both economic and cultural importance.</p>
<p>District 7 of Ho Chi Min City will be anchored and identified by this brilliant new symbol of vision and integrity. A modern tower soaring 275m into the skyline, this project will be the first Hyatt Place and Hyatt House co-branded development in Vietnam and will create a new destination for international and local visitors.</p>
<p>The project is located within an area of urban uplift and development on reclaimed mangroves, connected to multiple districts and with river frontages, the Eco Green Saigon project is a beacon for Ho Chi Minh City.</p>

<h6>Concept Planning</h6>
<p>A precinct-wide approach was taken in the planning of the building podium and greater connective elements.</p>
<p>The precinct is developed to connect multiple services together to create an integrated community. These extended hubs offer cultural events, community schools, retail centres and open parkland.</p>
<p>To connect the Towers with the greater precinct, pedestrian connections were envisioned to move people freely from podium to open parkland. These green bridges alleviate ground transport congestion while also promoting activity throughout the precinct.</p>
<p>The petals that reach out across the site do more than just connect people, they provide a consistent and unique architectural identity to the precinct.</p>
<p>A cascading podium builds from the park on all sides and creates pathways connecting levels and entries.</p>
<h6>Hyatt Place and Hyatt House</h6>
<p>Hyatt will be the major tenant and house two of their brands.</p>
<p>A Hyatt Place and Hyatt House will occupy the majority of the tower.</p>
<p>At the towers peak, there will be a series of penthouse suites, some of the highest in the city. These will be accessed by both ground services and a Helicopter landing area.</p>
<h6>Facade Development</h6>
<p>The facade was developed through connecting and extracting the cellular structures of endemic tall-stemmed plants.</p>
<p>The towers facade activates the city as a beacon of light, identifying both location and developing community recognition and understanding.</p>
<p>Shop houses will spring from the podium and serve the community with an activated ground plane, enabling a porous and human-scale threshold and creating a vibrant interface, often lost in high rise towers.</p>
<p>The landmark tower will be a beacon for Ho Chi Minh City and create new urban connectivity for District 7.</p>

<p>Located in the heart of Wujin, the burgeoning southern district of Changzhou, Jiangsu PRC, the Lotus Building and the 3.5-hectare People’s Park has been designed to act as a cultural anchor and civic landmark – establishing a symbolic commitment of local government ambitions and future aspirations.</p>
<p>The brief called for a public building and park that would embody a unique variety of civic nodes and public spaces. The Lotus Building is an addition to an existing double storey subterranean municipal facility situated beneath an existing artificial lake. The building houses parts of the planning bureau as well as new exhibition halls meeting rooms and conference centres.</p>

<h6>Concept</h6>
<p>The physical form of the building has been determined by the need to create a structure which has a distinctive presence; a character piece in a city can be in parts anonymous like so many other rapidly developing Chinese cities. The development, ultimately, seeks to generate participation, to build an ownership of place that builds ties to the community and entices its people to stay and flourish and not to be drawn away. This landmark aims to bring connection and depth to the community; to set a new standard for architectural ambition in the area and stimulate further urban development.</p>
<h6>Lotus Petals</h6>
<p>The Wujin Lotus’ most striking feature are the petals that wrap around the building’s perimeter. Positioned at varying angles and ranging in size, the petals tell the story of the Lotus’ life: from bud to full blossom, and the revelation of the seed pod, signifying the end of one cycle and the start of a new.</p>
<p>Transitioned and graded colour is applied to the side of the petal ribs, creating a deep hue only at the edge of the structure. A simple lighting system at the base of the petals illuminates the Wujin Lotus at night into a stunning flurry of colour, showcasing the buildings importance within this modern Chinese metropolis.</p>
<h6>Interior</h6>
<p>Visitors enter from beneath and are greeted with a cathedral like revelation of space. Colour and light combine and illuminate, creating a bright and uplifting interior atmosphere, no matter the weather. Hand laid, varied white, beige and stainless-steel hexagon mosaic tile finishes cover all external and internal surfaces; merging seamlessly to create a continuous form with studio505’s bespoke 7m high suspended chandelier at the apex, becoming the focus of attention, inside and out.</p>

<p>The extension to the existing Nanyang Primary School and Kindergarten in Singapore was designed around a large ‘internalised’ public Valley, open to the sky and the elements, but facing away from the residential streets surrounding the school. The design objective was to place the school’s communal space at the heart of the design.</p>


<h6>Concept</h6>
<p>The extension to the Nanyang Primary School was a response to the previous building’s lack of harmony with the natural topography of the site. The previous building, located parallel to the street and perpendicular to the direction of the natural slope that defines the site, created a ‘wall-like’, uninviting barrier when viewed from the entrance.</p>
<p>The new building volumes were aligned parallel to the direction of the hilltop slope and perpendicular to Coronation Road, creating a large inviting central valley. This valley is the key space in the extension and serves as both the entry to the site and the main orientation device.</p>
<h6>Courtyard</h6>
<p>The Valley draws the visitor gently up the slope, through the heart of the school at the top of the hill and into the large open courtyard of King’s Road campus.</p>
<h6>Facade</h6>
<p>The facade of the Nanyang Primary school was developed from a need to create a rich and dream-like external world of seemingly endless pathways of life. Establishing a sense of playfulness and creativity to its students, teachers and visitors, the façade to NYPS was designed by utilising low-cost budget application of emulsion paint onto precast concrete spandrels.</p>

<p>This project was won in collaboration with CPG Architects through an international design competition. The complex brief stipulated two key functions – that the Interpol Global Complex and the Security Annex were to be physically separated, whilst enabling and promoting collaborative exchange between the two agencies.</p>
<p>Our solution was to establish two counter-curving asymptotic forms on the site on either side of a diagonal line extension of the Grange Road intersection. Each facility has their own address: Interpol is oriented to Napier Road, and the Security Annex to Nassim Hill.</p>


<h6>Concept</h6>
<p>The approach consisted of researching and developing different concepts that allowed the two buildings to be separate from one another, whilst simultaneously fostering the idea of collaboration and partnership between the two organisations.</p>
<h6>Massing</h6>
<p>The final design features two counter-curving forms that sit either side of a diagonal line extension of the Grange Road intersection. Where the two curving building volumes ‘touch’ on the defining diagonal axis, they are linked via a skybridge at Level 4, and with a landscaped valley underneath. In elevation, Interpol is at its lowest where the Security Annexe is at its highest and vice-versa to minimise their respective impact on one another.</p>
<p>The bulk of the Interpol building (with its distinct curved urban form and iridescent facade cladding) is set away from the street, yet seemingly embraces the landscape and public space along Napier Road. The site massing allows for excellent solar orientation, as it minimizes Western exposure and ensured that all mature trees were maintained during construction.</p>
<h6>Facade</h6>
<p>The facade of the building responded to the forward driving ambition of the institutions. At strategic locations on each floor, the iridescently clad façade appears to ‘peel out’, representative of the different strands of activity and research housed within the building. These sections accentuate the curved form of the building, showcase the forward-driving ambition of the institution and generate internal pockets of collaborative informal meeting space, adjacent to the simple open-plan office floors.</p>

<p>Having just celebrated its first millennia of being, Hanoi is a vibrant city and one of the fastest growing metropolises in the world. As part of the city’s planned growth, an area north of the Red River has been earmarked for development, which will act as a gateway to the old city from Noi Bai International Airport, projecting a modern sophisticated image of Hanoi and Vietnam. Central to this placemaking and city branding exercise is the creation of an iconic super-tall tower.</p>
<p>The current masterplan locates this tower in one of the urban superblocks reserved as a finance district. Decibel have reviewed the masterplan and seen the potential to relocate the tower to a position north of its current site which will align it with the major boulevard, Võ Nguyên Giáp, and planned metro-line M2. This will place the tower along a natural urban axis creating an iconic and anchoring element to this urban precinct.</p>
<p>As part of the re-imagining of this precinct we have proposed that the tall tower will be complemented by a shopping and entertainment precinct, amusement parks, expo precinct and an eco-island. The tower itself will be a microcosm of urban life. As a vertical city it will house a worldclass high-rollers casino, serviced apartments, two hotels, and penthouse apartments. This will be crowned by a Sky Deck soaring some 529.5 meters above Hanoi’s new urban district, whilst providing unprecedented views over the historical city across the river. The base of the tower will integrate its urban context with a publicly accessible rainforest seamlessly linked with the proposed metro station.</p>


<h6>Initial Concept</h6>
<p>Initially, the thinking behind Hanoi 108’s form revolved around a Crystalline form – to consider simplicity and explore the nature of a crystal, amalgamated form being able to create the variety and formal shifts required in a Super Tall Tower for both wind and classic iconic thinking perspectives.</p>
<h6>Facade Development</h6>
<p>The development of the building and facade form looks to the rich history of traditional dress in Vietnam. Ubiquitous in Vietnamese culture, these dresses fall and flow to create smooth and gentle human forms. These forms are emulated within Hanoi 108, gracefully becoming a symbolic and iconic addition to the Hanoi skyline.</p>
<h6>Metro Line</h6>
<p>Critical to the revitalisation of Hanoi’s Commercial Expo Precinct and future financial district is creating a metro station that will help to stimulate growth to the area.</p>
<p>Currently no such station exists in the current masterplan. Decibel Architecture saw this as an opportunity to integrate a metro station within Hanoi 108, allowing large numbers of people to access this precinct from the Airport and other urban areas by public transport, ensuring its long-term success.</p>
<h6>Rainforest</h6>
<p>The ground floor of Hanoi 108 will house an enclosed, publicly accessible rainforest similar to the Cool Moist Conservatory at Esplanade Gardens by the Bay in Singapore. This will sit within a 40m high vaulted atrium, formed by a transfer structure to the levels above.</p>
<p>The rainforest will house a broad variety of flora, including several large canopy trees, waterfalls and a canopy walkway for ticketed public use. Lobbies for the casino, office buildings, apartments and hotels are distributed around the building according to their core locations, and clearly marked entries. The entire Forest Foyer is sectioned into microclimates that reflect the varied natural environments that can be found across Vietnam and in cooler climates, providing both a local and international tourism attraction.</p>

<p>The project of Phoenix Valley is a government funded and operated Theatre, Film and Arts Centre in Wujin, China. Run as an invited design competition in late 2009, the brief proposed strict zoning for the site which directed all designers to divert an axial canal in a blunt right hand turn across the front of a basic rectangular building footprint and left open the option of a square to the front or the side.</p>
<p>studio505’s winning scheme broke this zoning and instead proposed that the canal was drawn into the site, becoming the active element that has carved out the valley from a green roofed mountain mass. This gesture created a protected internal courtyard space, an internalised yet outdoor central gathering space secure from busy roads, allowing a public space, connection to a public screen and access to all the parts of the centre from within the valley.</p>

<h6>Concept</h6>
<p>The Phoenix Valley Youth Palace is a deeply cultural project. Located in Wujin, China, Phoenix Valley neighbours the historic area of Yancheng City. Built approximately 2500 years ago, Yancheng City is characterized by its three concentric moats that circle the site. Pieces of more than 1000 rare cultural relics have been unearthed from the Yancheng Site, and to this day it remains a popular and historically important tourist destination to the Jiangsu Province.</p>
<p>Also native to the Jiangsu Province (where Phoenix Valley lies) is the art of random stitch embroidery. Created in the 1920’s by <a href="http://www.suembroidery.com/embroidery_blog/article/12-08/Chinese_crisscross_stitch_embroidery_artist.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Madam Yang Shouyu</a>, random stitch embroidery innovated the traditional methods of  embroidery, featured of “closely needled parallel lines”, by adopting stitch replacing brush and ink, and using threads as colours, which perfectly combines the principles of Western paintings with Chinese embroidery.</p>
<p>Phoenix Valley is an amalgamation of these traditions – a project that is deeply connected to area, society, culture, and people.</p>
<h6>Form + Urban Massing</h6>
<p>studio505’s proposal to redirect an existing canal through the site helped reveal the form of the building. The canal cuts through the site, creating an internal space for protection and focus away from the road, and allowing the building to announce her presence as both a single urban figure, and as a series of independent functional entities within the complex.</p>
<h6>Sustainability</h6>
<p>studio505 embedded technologies, thinking and design processes developed and tested in the much smaller, award-winning <a href="https://wp.db-a.co/projects/pixel-building/">Pixel Building</a>. This comprises Green Roof technology, Built-In Photovoltaic (BIPV) and Solar Thermal arrays, Natural Ventilation, LED lighting and sophisticated water management systems including thermal heat exchangers, with the canal waters flowing through and beneath the project. Phoenix Valley achieved the maximum 3 stars under the China Three Star, equivalent to 5/6 stars under the LEED Gold system.</p>
<h6>Grand Theatre</h6>
<p>The Grand Theatre of Phoenix Valley is one of the key elements to the precinct and the public showpiece of this institution. With a capacity of 1000 patrons, the Grand Theatre is a B-Class traditional staging theatre, with full below-stage decks, and fly towers over 40m high to enable a full Chinese Opera to be staged. It can also be adapted back to form a cinema or conference auditorium space.</p>
<p>Upon entering the main theatre auditorium from either level (stalls or balcony), the inspiration of the origami cicada is revealed in the massive but subtly fluid theatre walls and ceiling elements, which fold and flow around the internal shell. These walls form the acoustic and visual surface of the theatre interior – led strip lights sewn into the fabric bring an incredible clarity to the subtly curving forms.</p>

<p>Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) was won through an international design competition in association with HOK and CPG Consultants and consists of a 707-bed general hospital and 396-bed community hospital. Our aim was to design a radical new ward layout, enhancing the hospital experience for patients and staff, with ‘patient-centeredness’ at the very heart of the design.</p>

<h6>About</h6>
<p>The pioneering new design for the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) wards differentiates from the typical hospital design so prevalent in the Southeast Asian region. Our innovative new patient bed configuration in the naturally ventilated 6-bed and 12-bed ward rooms, improves natural ventilation by 200% and gives every patient their own window, close to their bed, with a view to a garden and access to fresh air.</p>
<p>By incorporating natural ventilation and outdoor views, we achieved a comfortable and restorative environment to aid in the patient healing process.</p>
<h6>Ward Model</h6>
<p>To test the efficiency of various ward configuration options, we built multiple physical models, including a 1:1 prototype. Along with these models, state-of-the-art software was utilized to analyse sun shading, ventilation airflow and wind flow. Through this exploration of environmental factors, we were able to compare the innovative ward layouts against conventional layouts, collecting evidence and research into the core design of key hospital areas.</p>
<h6>Energy Efficient Design</h6>
<p>The innovative design of the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) takes into consideration Singapore’s hot and humid weather. The external gardens and planters at patient windows provide a source of fresh air and help to naturally cool the wards through solar shading.</p>
<p>These planters create an iconic and refined looking building from the outside – evoking optimism to patients and reaching a new benchmark in hospital and healthcare design.</p>

<p>CV Windsor is an exciting project that has radically transformed the way people live and work in Melbourne. As briefed by the client, the development was designed as a creative hub and incubator of modern professionals giving them opportunity to live and work from home.</p>
<p>The cross pollination of ideas is expressed as shared residential lounges, libraries, meeting rooms and garden areas spread across the project. CV Windsor&#8217;s effortless luxury and elegant design, perfectly position it as one of Melbourne’s most vibrant locales.</p>

<p><strong>Design Response</strong></p>
<p>CV Windsor was conceived to deliver a unique typology of living for the local area. The concept developed around the idea of a “townhouse in the sky”.</p>
<p>Within the project there are significant and generous communal spaces at the ground and roof levels – provided to establish and enable creative living interactions between residents and foster a sense of community.</p>
<p>At ground level are lounge areas, a spacious kitchen and dining areas. Located on Level 8 is a shared residential garden. This garden gives residents the opportunity to grow their own food, exercise, BBQ, or relax with friends.</p>
<p><strong>Environmental Sustainability</strong></p>
<p>Environmental sustainability featured as a high priority throughout this project. The dual aspects allows for the majority of apartments to have access to both northern and southern light as well as excellent cross-ventilation. Solar panels are used to collect energy for use in communal areas. Grey water and rainwater are harvested for reuse.</p>
<p><strong>The Developer</strong></p>
<p>The client aspired to provide an owner-occupy concept in this intensely competitive market, where dollar per square metre seems the only concern in strategic composition. Here they have succeeded not only in forming a building, but in the creation of a community.</p>
<p><strong>Rooftop Garden</strong></p>
<p>The rooftop garden allows the community to grow vertically into a shared space that promotes city views and shared experiences. Amenities include private dining spaces, communal cooking areas, a vegetable garden and stunning views.</p>
<p>Surrounded by lush gardens, this tree-top escape is now enjoyed by the residents year-round, and provides essential connection between dream, concept, and community.</p>
<p><strong>Art Facade</strong></p>
<p>The Punt Road facade was developed into an art piece by renowned Australian artist, <a href="https://www.magmagalleries.com/kim-westcott-cover/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kim Westcott</a>. Using her printmaking background to reimagine Australian landscapes and the flora and fauna they hold; Kim has created a facade that exudes experience and growth of a building connected to nature and community.</p>
<p><strong>Interior Design</strong></p>
<p>Creating a home in the bustling city suburb of Windsor required attention to detail and the affectual qualities and materials that define a space. CV Windsor&#8217;s interiors were designed not only with material quality in mind, but with careful spatial planning that created beautiful living environments, comfort, ownership and a sense of place.</p>
<p>Free flowing open-plan areas are complemented by secluded working and living zones to allow both joint experiences and individual comfort.</p>
<p>The development of working areas within the apartments delivered multiple modes of living that encourage the occupier to curate their individualised home experience.</p>
<p><strong>Creating A Community</strong></p>
<p>CV Windsor endeavours to connect people and improve the lives of the occupants that call 105 Punt Road home. By delivering apartments designed outside of the box, this multi-residential project makes a case to redefine the way modern high-density communities live.</p>

<p>The LUME Melbourne was Australia’s first permanent digital art gallery – a gallery in which the visitor is fully immersed in a multi-sensory experience. Housed across two of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre&#8217;s (MCEC) massive halls from 2021 to 2025, The LUME Melbourne played host landmark exhibitions celebrating some of the world’s most famous artists, with their work projected at a larger-than-life scale, creating an awe-inspiring experience for both public and private functions.</p>

<h6>Collaboration</h6>
<p><a href="https://www.grande-experiences.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Grande Experiences</a> came to Decibel Architecture with a strong concept based on its years of creating and hosting travelling immersive shows. Decibel Architecture worked closely with the client’s technical team, a specialist consultant team and the building contractor to deliver The LUME Melbourne in a highly coordinated way within a fast-tracked programme. Due to its contextual and operational requirements, the project was subject to a level of architectural and legislative challenges unusual for exhibition design projects. We were able to apply our architectural expertise, not only in design, but in delivery, stake-holder management, consultant team coordination and communication to successfully complete The LUME Melbourne.</p>
<h6>The Journey</h6>
<p>A matte black gateway projects dramatically into the MCEC’s entry concourse, disrupting its extruded continuity and clearly marking the gallery’s entry-point. The patrons’ journey begins as they pass through one of the three wall-papered tunnels into the intimately lit Introduction and Interpretation space. The visitor’s sense of space is disorientated and compressed as they pass through a light locking corridor before it is expanded when emerging into the vastness of the Main Gallery.</p>
<h6>Design and Experience</h6>
<p>The architectural environment of The LUME Melbourne was designed to allow every surface, including the floor, to become the canvas upon which the gallery’s animated content is projected. Large-scale objects in space subtly divide the space into experiential zones inviting different perspectives of the immersive programme. A long mezzanine with a frameless glazed balustrade provides an elevated advantage point down onto the gallery space.</p>
<h6>Delivery</h6>
<p>The fast-track delivery model employed for the project allowed the works to be delivered within the client’s programme. A first stage of documentation allowed the structural and acoustic work to commence on site whilst the architectural and building services scope were being documented and certified. Through careful programming, the Main Gallery space was able to be handed over to The LUME Melbourne’s technical team to install and commission its audio-visual infrastructure, whilst the auxiliary spaces were built and fitted out.</p>
<p>The delivery of major built elements such as an 80m long, 11m high acoustic wall between The LUME Melbourne’s tenancy and its neighbouring hall were possible due to the successful management of a large array of project stakeholders. The committed working relationship between client, architect and builder ensured clear lines of communication and understanding of responsibilities and led the exceptional built and experiential outcomes.</p>

<p>Decibel Architecture have conceived a radical new purpose-driven residential tower on the site of the Royal Society of Victoria (RSV), at the north-eastern corner of Melbourne’s Hoddle Grid. The RSV is one of the oldest Scientific Organisations in Australia, and One Victoria has been conjured to create a sustainable foundation and endowment fund for their delivery of Science to Community.</p>
<p>Soaring more than 60 storeys and a possible 330m into the sky, One Victoria will become the tallest resident in Melbourne’s growing skyline. Driven by world-leading Victorian expertise in construction, engineering, science and technology, the proposition will secure a sustainable future for the Royal Society of Victoria, push building technology to the limit and reinforce Melbourne’s leadership in science and liveability. The building is an instrument, an iconic and abstract marker for the World Heritage Listed Royal Exhibition building, another bold, innovative and record-breaking proposition by Melburnian’s to reach for the impossible and expand the volume of knowledge in the world.</p>

<p>Decibel Architecture looked to the writings and ideas of the highly influential science fiction writer and futurist, Sir Arthur C. Clarke, a voracious proponent of innovation.</p>
<h1>Clarkes &#8216;laws&#8217; of prediction state:</p>

<li>When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, they are almost certainly right. When they state that something is impossible, they are very probably wrong.</li>
<li>They only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.</li>

<h6>The Royal Society of Victoria</h6>
<p>The Royal Society of Victoria (RSV) convenes Victoria&#8217;s science community. It is the State&#8217;s oldest learned society and a part of Australia&#8217;s intellectual life since 1854. The Society provides a dynamic program of lectures, symposia and forums about science.</p>
<p>Established in 1854 (as the Philosophical Society of Victoria), the RSV&#8217;s purpose has been the promotion and advancement of science, and the dissemination of scientific information to the public.</p>
<p>For nearly 170 years the RSV has continued to play a significant role in the growth of scientific endeavour, the dissemination of scientific knowledge and its technological application in the community.</p>
<p>One Victoria will secure a sustainable future for the RSV, enabling the continuation of their important state-wide work into the future and creating a flow of millions of dollars to revitalise the organisation, enabling it to:</p>

<li>Support citizen science, technology, and science clubs across Melbourne and Victoria.</li>
<li>Enhance and upgrade the heritage listed home of the RSV to meet modern accessibility requirements and be fit of the 21st century public engagement required.</li>
<li>Develop a science engagement centre and science café.</li>
<li>Create a perpetual endowment fund, enabling the RSV&#8217;s purpose, projects and awards programs to be supercharged for the next 200 years.</li>
</ul>
<p>One Victoria will become an iconic marker within the Melbourne and Australian skyline. As the tallest possible proposition on an extremely constrained site, it will become the city&#8217;s tallest and skinniest skyscraper as well as the most innovative, most sustainable and tallest possible &#8216;reach for the stars&#8217; proposition that can be created, demonstrating ingenuity and utilising cutting-edge sustainable technologies.</p>
